Vancouver mayor seeks to curb housing speculation

Vancouver’s mayor has come out firing in the debate over housing affordability, calling for a provincial “luxury housing” tax, a levy on property flippers, and the power to reduce the number of unoccupied homes. Mayor Gregor Robertson made the requests to Premier Christy Clark in a letter released Wednesday, saying it is the province’s responsibility to curb “unwarranted speculation” by “the world’s wealthiest citizens” who are behind Vancouver’s worst-ever housing affordability crisis.
