Last May, a woman moved from Decatur, Georgia to Bemidji, New Mexico. As of this morning, Heather Lucas is still waiting for the moving company she hired to deliver her belongings.
According to a FOX Carolina story, Lucas signed a contract with a broker in California that sold the moving job to a company called “You Box It,” a mover located just outside of Atlanta. The woman has claimed that she wasn’t aware Atlantic Express Moving and Storage–the original company she signed the contract with–was going to pass the job along to someone else. She discovered this information shortly after all of her things had been packed onto the truck.
As one of the top moving portals in the industry, Movers.com prides itself on customer service and satisfaction. This is why we provide moving reviews for companies, given by you–the customer. We highly recommend that each prospective customer researches the movers s/he is considering before signing any contracts. This is the most effective way to avoid falling victim to moving scams like the one described above. Moving fraud is becoming more and more common, and our team is doing all we can to combat it.
Though Lucas’ example is a bit extreme, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reports that thousands of people experience moving fraud every year. We advise all of our customers to take the time to submit reviews for their moving companies after their moves are complete. This will not only reduce the risk of moving scams, but it will also help future customers find reliable movers.
As for Ms. Lucas’ situation, You Box It holds an “F” rating on the Better Business Bureau’s website. According to the BBB, the moving company has received various complaints about delayed deliveries and damaged goods, not to mention severe upcharges on shipments. The FMCSA has also reported at least six complaints against the GA moving company in the past year and a half.
But how can we avoid this in the future? What is the lesson to be learned?
One of the best ways to prevent rogue movers from scamming you is to do your research. Make sure the company is properly licensed and insured. As we mentioned, check for legitimate reviews about the company, using the tools available through our website and others.
